Our Strategy

Diversify Health supports and applauds federal efforts — like Health Resources & Services Administration — and the tireless work of professional organizations — like the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and American Association of Medical Colleges — in promoting the critical need for greater diversity in the health care professions.

We also recognize the urgency of now and believe passionately that more can and MUST be done to include and encourage historically underrepresented minorities in health care careers.  At Diversify Health, our approach is simple:

01.

WE PARTNER WITH COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

We work with institutions of higher education to develop and support local outreach efforts at high schools and collegiate functions. Our collaborative outreach serves to raise awareness about Diversify Health to future nurse and physician leaders of color.

Our goal is for 100 college and university partners to commit to providing tuition-free education to, at minimum, one medical and/or two nursing students for the duration of their education for three cycles of graduates.

When we achieve our goal — which we will through the courage and brilliance of our scholars and the vision and generosity of our supporters — 300 physicians and/or 600 nurses from historically underrepresented groups will join and lead the U.S. health care workforce over the next four to twelve years.

02.

WE FUND-RAISE TO COVER THE NON-TUITION EXPENSES OF HIGHER EDUCATION.

We recognize that the cost of college is much more than tuition — and that non-tuition costs can be a major hurdle for students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.

Using available data from The Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data System, we calculate the total non-tuition costs for our Diversify Health scholars according to academic year (undergraduate vs. graduate) and geography (city and state).

Funds for non-tuition expenses are distributed directly to our Scholars in equal amounts at the beginning of the Fall and Spring academic term for the entire duration of the students’ education.

03.

OUR DIVERSIFY HEALTH GRADUATES HELP FUND THE NEXT GENERATION OF DIVERSIFY HEALTH SCHOLARS.

Upon graduation and gainful employment, Diversify Health graduates repay a percentage of the non-tuition funds they received in order to underwrite the non-tuition expenses of the next generation of Diversify Health scholars.

We calculate the financial percentage that Diversify Health graduates will repay based on the graduate’s specialty, where she/he practices, and/or the socioeconomic and demographic factors of the patient community she/he serves.
